Football

Robert has enjoyed a vast array of experiences as a coach which have led him to encounter all different kinds of football. While his predilection is for a short-passing style based around link-up play, he is capable of getting the best from all manner of scenarios and conditions. As a true student of the game, he remains at the forefront of the predominant styles across different leagues, observing the distinctive features of all kinds of football. His time spent in Italy, France and Spain, the latter across almost every level, has equipped him with a broad, cross-sectional knowledge base. At the heart of his game lies the player, and getting results by reaching optimum performance for every squad he has led. He enjoys working with young players, having had the experience of heading up various youth teams of different ages over the course of his career.

"... I think a coach must be able to maximise performance in any situation. Often, you are not in a position to choose the players you have, but you can decide how you want them to play. I want to get the better of the other team offensively and defensively, create more chances than them and stifle their ability to cause us problems. But you have to understand this is the ideal and is by no means easy..."

Technology

Robert started out in professional football as a video analyst for FC Barcelona's B-team. He is considered a pioneer in his country in the application of technology in football. He has collaborated with LaLiga in developing the analytical program MediaCoach, taking a role as external advisor in the validation of the project, as well as monitoring its evolution. He is passionate about data and has brought the use of technology into the vast majority of teams with which has worked, both as assistant and head coach.

"... a coach's work demands the application of technology in order to get the best out of everybody. The data that can be harvested today through images, Big Data, GPS and other elements simply cannot be taken on by the coaching staff. That's why I firmly believe in making the most of these advances... The players need, and often demand, increasing levels of information. Each individual has certain characteristics which make them unique within the group. As such, they each require an individual approach in order to help them reach their optimum performance levels..."
